You don't have to make it. You should be able to find one somewhere. It seems that the only ones I have seen for the last few years have been plastic, but there might still be some metal ones somewhere.

I Googled it. Yeah, you can still get the metal ones.

The best wood to use, and indeed, with a few cheaper exceptions, the only wood used by commercial pipemakers is briar. Briar is the root ball of the white heath tree, and is very hard and dense, yet breathes well allowing the heat to dissipate.

You may want to look into side mount chain driven openers, more commonly found on commercial overhead doors
